NEC Set to Deliver HSDPA to 3 Hong Kong

NEC Corporation (NEC) announced that its High Speed Down link Packet Access (HSDPA) is to be deployed in the 3G network of 3 Hong Kong, a subsidiary of Hutchison Telecommunications (Hong Kong) Limited. This contract has been awarded to NEC and its 3G partner Siemens following a successful field trial on 3 Hong Kong's UMTS network.

During the field trial, NEC's HSDPA-based UTRAN achieved a high level of performance and functionality, including high-speed internet access, consecutive data transmission and handover in a HSDPA service environment, while allowing flexible and variable changes in transmission speed.

"The absolute success of NEC's HSDPA trials on Hong Kong's largest 3G network highlights our thorough confidence in the high performance of a commercial HSDPA system. NEC is ready to deliver its HSDPA to commercial networks worldwide", said Toshiyuki Mineno, Senior General Manager at NEC's Carrier Solutions Business Unit.

"Since Europe's first commercial service launch by Hutchison 3G in the UK in March 2003, NEC has delivered many 3G networks to Hutchison. This latest win is further testimony of our leading competence in this field and another great milestone in the continuing success of the highly reliable 3G and HSDPA network provided by NEC to Hutchison, together with our 3G partner Siemens. We fully intend to implement further HSDPA operation trials in Europe and Asia with the cooperation of local mobile operators to ensure the successful spread of our high performance HSDPA."

Amy Lung, Commercial Director - Consumer Market of 3 Hong Kong, said, "3 Hong Kong once again charts the course in the development of 3G in Hong Kong.

With the successful trial and network rollout, we are well positioned to be the first to provide 3 Hong Kong's supporters with supremely enhanced mobile communications experience, once the HSDPA compatible devices are available. In this significant stage of development, we are pleased to partner with our existing 3G network supplier NEC who is renowned for its proven expertise and global experience in deploying 3G and HSDPA technology."

NEC's HSDPA system is jointly developed by NEC and Siemens. HSDPA can be easily added to existing Node-Bs with channel cards and downloaded software. As the pioneer of the global 3G W-CDMA market, NEC/Siemens alliance has achieved outstanding success. Over 90% of the world's 3G subscribers are communicating with 3G network technology provided by Siemens/NEC. In a report from April 2005, NEC/Siemens was positioned as No. 1 by the independent MM Research Institute in Tokyo in the 3G W-CDMA market for commercially installed Node-Bs with a 30.1 percent share of the worldwide market.

Intel and Microsoft Plans for New Virtualization Technologies

Intel Corporation and Microsoft Corp., at Intel Developer Forum, San Francisco, outlined plans to connect computer network management technologies and also to work together to advance promising virtualization technology that will bring businesses new capabilities and cost savings.

In a move to bring unique management benefits to the broad number of users of Microsoft® Systems Management Server 2003 (SMS) for the first time, Intel plans to connect its new Intel® Active Management Technology (Intel® AMT) with Microsoft SMS, substantially enhancing customers’ ability to more thoroughly protect their computers from viruses and to help significantly lower maintenance costs.

Intel and Microsoft have also joined together to extend Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT) to include support for mapping I/O devices to virtual machines on servers with a new specification, published today, called Intel Virtualization for Directed I/O (Intel VT-d). Part of the Intel VT family of technologies, Intel VT-d helps improve the reliability, flexibility and performance of I/O in a virtualized environment. Microsoft has collaborated with Intel on development of the specification to help ensure it provides optimal functionality for users.

“Intel AMT and Microsoft SMS will mean relief for those who manage computer networks who have struggled to effectively control virus outbreaks, audit networked PCs or handle computer problems without affecting users’ productivity,” said Pat Gelsinger, Intel senior vice president, general manager, Digital Enterprise Group. “In addition, the combination of hardware virtualization in Intel VT-d working with Microsoft operating systems, management tools and Windows® hypervisor technology promises dramatic new capabilities and efficiencies.”

“Microsoft is pleased that customers using SMS 2003, including our recently announced SMS 2003 R2, can take advantage of the new capabilities delivered through Intel AMT and Intel’s Professional Business Platform via the Intel developed add-on software for SMS,” said Bob Muglia, senior vice president of the Server and Tools Business at Microsoft. “This enables customers to better manage their environments and computing infrastructures by reducing many challenges they face today. Similarly, Microsoft is increasing its investments in the Microsoft System Center family of products to address resource optimization and virtual machine life-cycle management so customers can manage their physical and virtualized environments from one toolset.”

Hollitech (Dutch), UNSIL (Tasikmalaya) and PT. TDC in IT partnership

Throughout the Asia Pacific region, the demand for IT outsourcing and call centers is rapidly rising. While Indonesian hackers are earning ‘reputation’ globally, this is a signal that Indonesia has the human resources to successfully engage in this promising industry. This is the fundament of a partnership between European, Indonesian and Asian actors. This partnership includes the expertise, knowledge and industrial know-how of the Dutch IT firm Hollitech (based in the Netherlands, India and Indonesia); the largest and private university of Tasikmalaya (established 28 years ago by the Indonesian Armed Forces), University of Siliwangi (UNSIL); and PT Tasik Development Company, the independent social investment arm, connected to PA Asia Jakarta.

Hollitech’s President Director, Mr. Jacques Rijsenbilt: “I am excited with the idea that this Indonesian platform will potentially serve a global market, in order to achieve the company’s main objective, i.e. to put Indonesia on the map for the global software off-shoring industry”.

Rector Magnificus Prof. Numan Sumantri: “This project uniquely combines UNSIL’s academic base and its newly established ‘Edgar Brood Academic Chair for English’ and Hollitech’s driving force in the IT market. Siliwangi University has a computer center. With Hollitech experts, we are ready to jump and professionalize our education through a strong market orientation”.

Mr. Rio D. Praaning Prawira Adiningrat, President Director of PT. TDC: “Wageningen University and UNSIL identified growth opportunities for the Tasik region. This included a new SME center and the construction of a new port at Cikalong with additional infrastructure. This new platform is exactly what is required to align Tasik’s human potential with Indonesia’s future economic growth”.

Best Technology for Online Low-fare

Amadeus, a global leader in technology and distribution solutions for the travel and tourism industry, today announced the results of a study into the effectiveness of a number of low-fare search tools. Data for the study was gathered using world leading online fare analysis technology and services provided by an independent third party, SITA. The study found that online travel agencies using Amadeus technology were much more likely to find the lowest fares for their customers.

In 55% of searches, Amadeus low-fare technology returned the lowest fare compared with 52% from the closest competitor and only 18% from the poorest performer. Furthermore, in 69% of cases, the Amadeus fare was within 5 Euros (pounds sterling in the UK) of the lowest fare. On average, Amadeus returned fares €50 cheaper than the most expensive alternative. The results are more impressive because the study was skewed against Amadeus: the Amadeus data did not include negotiated fares but there was no way of knowing if the competition’s fares were negotiated or not.

Moreover, Amadeus low-fares are the most reliable of those compared. Reliably bookable fares increase consumers’ trust in the online travel agency and improves the look-to-book ratio. The study compared the results of low-fare searches performed in France, UK and Germany on Amadeus’ own GDS using Amadeus Master Pricer with the results from online travel agencies known to be using other GDS low-fare search products.

Amadeus Master Pricer is a low-fare search tool for online travel agencies, which offers cheaper fares and extended shopping capabilities. The tool, which returns over 200 low-fare search options from a single query, brings unprecedented speed and flexibility to an online portal. Customers whose travel dates are flexible can broaden their search to include a greater range of dates; those with a flexible itinerary can extend their search to multiple airports or cities. Both these innovations increase the online travel agency’s yield by allowing their customers to quickly find the option that best suits them.

Master Pricer will be available with Amadeus Selling Platform 2.3 from January 2006. It will allow agents full shopping functionality integrated with a new Calendar display to sell the best date-price combinations in a single view.
